BELLINZONA to ANDERMATT 10 JULY

Lake Maggiore and more Swiss Alps.

We were due for a change of scenery so decided to have a look at Lake Maggiore, just near Bellinzona, which is 70km long and extends from Switzerland into Italy.

Quite spectacular with the Swiss alps in the background.

And then it was time to turn toward Andermatt, the scenery was spectacular.

The Lukmanier Pass (1914m) was quite different to other passes we have seen, it is now mid summer and most of the ice has melted on the lower hillsides, so we are seeing lots of greenery with some snow in the background. Stunning !

Over the pass and down toward Disentis/Muster it was even greener.

Fellow riders being inspectected by Alpacas-

And one more pass for the day - The Oberalpass (2044m) one of the best we have done, more sweeping bends, with some switchbacks, but quite easy riding today with stunning views.

Andermatt is where John Hermann commences his rides detailed in his book. We had to come here and see for ourselves.
The town is nestled amongst huge Alps, way down in the valley.

And another beer for Steve - becoming quite a habit at the end of the day.

E2232A3F2219AC681738E6BAC2DC5D1A.jpg

The centre of town and some very interesting architecture - a lot of timber is used for the Hotels and Shops.

Tomorrow we will be tackling some more John Hermann recommended rides.

TIEFENCASTEL to BELLINZONA (Switzerland) 9 July

Passes and more passes

After yesterdays rain we were pleased to see the sun shining today.
Before leaving Tiefencastel we tried to re-fuel bikes, what a joke, 100 Frank note and a cash or card pre-pay only machine.
We couldn't get any change, so opted for 20 Franks by card. That will have to do, and at these prices it wasn't very much fuel.
Leaving Tiefencastel it was a short run up the mountain before encountering the first photo opportunity of the day, have a look at this road barely hanging on the cliff edge.

011_-_Copy__800x533_.jpg

My favourite sign, they are on all the great bike roads in Switzerland -
022__533x800_.jpg

Over the Albulapass (2312m) the scenery was stunning as usual -

B108058B2219AC6817EC1B38D2B4334D.jpgB10A8C0A2219AC681750EB7932EDC86B.jpg

Coming back down from Albulapass we stopped at St.Moritz for a coffee at the Yacht Club overlooking the lake - as you do !!!

B10D06222219AC6817FB27676AA29D16.jpgB10FFBB62219AC6817901A2F98D78442.jpg

Just past St. Moritz we were taken by surprise going over the Malojapass (1815m) , around a corner and then we were right into switchbacks (hair-pin bends for non riders) a lot of fun. You have to look close at the photo to see the road looping backwards and forwards down the mountain.

B1132ED92219AC6817CA0522D9C397FB.jpg

And an interesting way to made a road and not disturb the rocks, just put the road right through the gap -

B115E3FF2219AC6817242175C5C8FA4E.jpgB118C6912219AC68175FF6E7F90320D8.jpgB11EF1422219AC68178E072C44672863.jpg

And then for Pass 3 for the day, we turned at Chiavenna towards the Splugenpass (2113m)

B121852B2219AC681775CA0A40A21DDF.jpg

The small village of Montespluga, right beside the lake (water reservoir) is shadowed by huge snow covered alps -spectacular :-

And then the fun started, many many more switch-backs :-

136__800x533_.jpg141__533x800_.jpgB136E8E82219AC68172F199B951DFF73.jpgB139C7D52219AC6817957EB531AA8ECF.jpgB13D8DA72219AC6817767146E3193711.jpgB140FF8D2219AC681749BEA3DDC6D0FA.jpg

The restaurant at the top of San Bernardino Pass (2065m) was a very welcome rest spot.

B143805B2219AC6817B4B648D30F3C71.jpg191__800x533_.jpg192__800x533_.jpgB14D465C2219AC6817BBC3B67F1CF9AF.jpg

The waterfalls are huge, cascading down the alps as the snow melts-

207__533x800_.jpg

And some interesting buildings which I haven't quite worked out yet - but I will. I think they are old houses now used for storage but not sure.

214__800x533_.jpg

It was now time to call it a day after 4 big passes, staying in BellInzona tonight and on into Andermatt tomorrow.

GARMISCH (Germany) to TIEFENCASTEL (Switzerland) 8 July

Beatuiful Switzerland and a Thunderstorm

After a few days at Garmisch and the BMW gathering it was good to get back on the Bikes and on the road again.
We left in glorious sunshine (again) riding toward Landeck but bypassing by using the longest tunnel yet - 7995m.
Turning at Pfunds towards the Fluelapass we were still enjoying sunshine and beautiful scenery.

7587BCD52219AC681799AD1127771C8B.jpg759232DB2219AC6817B2C19B742BB8F1.jpg7594C0B62219AC68170D128EE4332936.jpg759765CB2219AC68170AC250E86FE7F0.jpg

The Fluelapass (2383m) was very spectacular, snow capped alps and my favourite - reflections on water.

759B51772219AC68175339828D379130.jpg75A483122219AC6817D8C150A61CEE07.jpg75A7405E2219AC6817351C44FB129477.jpg75AC4E582219AC68172D7A4A92E71F2D.jpg75AF373C2219AC6817084581D0930B02.jpg75B71E922219AC6817321C90253B5F87.jpg

Steve took a turn at putting up the sticker -

025__533x800_.jpg

And a few other vehicles on the road (not BMW bikes for a change)

75B1D6BC2219AC6817080AABB2DE2B8C.jpg75B4894C2219AC68179B3283F1F3BCB5.jpg75A0DE362219AC681792DA091121C790.jpg

Down the other side, the snow is melting, causing many cascading waterfalls & streams -

75B9B3502219AC68176BC2D2A1865E6F.jpg

We made it to Weisen before the heavens opened, thunder & lighting convinced us to shelter in town until it eased.

75BC885D2219AC681745A9A5F8C88DF0.jpg75BF44192219AC6817366BE07C67D9EA.jpg

We had planned to continue on further and do another Pass - big change of plans.
We have stopped at Tiefencastel, good decision as the storm has continued.
