CORTINA - Dolimites DAY 2 24 JUNE

Just another day in the Dolimites

Waking to the sound of thunder it was not looking good for riding today, we spent some time planning the next part of our trip.

A582C86D2219AC681776BD60EA99A526.jpg

At lunch time it started to clear so we ventured in to Cortina to check out the shops, all the other tourists had the same idea as the streets were full of people - and the shops were all CLOSED !! Italy has a ridiculous tradition of closing all retail shops, and quite a lot of restaurants, between 12:30 and 3:00pm. We have been caught out many times.

The skies started to clear so we decided to do the ride we had planned for today, up to Passo di Giau 2233m
Made famous by John Hermann (and also Lin & Prue who feature in his book at the top) we decided it was not to be missed. (Part of trip 51)

We were not disappointed, in fact were very stunned as there had been fresh snowfall overnight.

Parking at Giau peak we were surrounded by snow - bit chilly for my poor bike who has not experienced such low temperatures.

And of course - another Aussie sticker was added to the collection.

Poor little Aussie bikes from Port Macquarie.

Lunch outside was not an option -

The Ristorante is quite cosy.

Our lunch was delicious (vegetarians look away now !!)

Tagliatelle with Deer Ragout.

The rich & famous always have their photos taken at strategic points -

Time to move on.

Continuing the loop we rode through Passo Cibiana hoping the weather would hold so we could go up to the Messner Mountain Museum, no such luck. It was now starting to look ominous so home we went.

CORTINA d.Ampezzo 23 JUNE

DOLIMITES

A day in the Dolimites.

The morning view from our hotel - which is a Ski Chalet in winter and a resort in summer.

We did a short but very time consuming ride - 110 kms, and it took most of the day. Mainly due to stopping frequently to stare at the amazing Alps.

Auronzo d. Cadore

Tre cime di Lavaredo - 2999m (3 mountains, the most photograped area of Italy - apparently !)
We paid to enter, quite expensive but well worth it - awesome views.

Back around Mt. Crisfallo 3321m a change of scenery but still stunning.

Cortina is a very unique little town surrounded by Alps.

Our bikes have been inspected and photographed many many times, they draw a lot of attention.

RIVA d GARDA TO CORTINA d'AMPEZZO 22 JUNE

To the dolomites

Our final evening in Riva we enjoyed dinner overlooking the lake before taking a few farewell photos.

l_017__800x533_.jpg

We stayed at the Ambassador hotel and made good use of the pool as the weather is still quite warm.

l_021__800x533_.jpg

Leaving on Saturday morning we were treated to glorious sunshine and some spectacular views.
l_029__800x533_.jpg

Seeing this sign we know we are definitely going in the right direction.

From Riva we crossed Trento and went up Valdi Chembra to venture up the Manghen Pass, some of the locals had the same idea.

l_057__800x533_.jpgl_059__800x533_.jpg

Manghen Pass is 2047m and very popular with Motor Bike, Push Bike riders, and bears.

(did you spot the Aussie sticker?)

Even more impressive coming back down.

l_078__800x533_.jpg

The locals have now learnt to stick to their own side of the road.

l_082__800x533_.jpg

Getting closer to the Dolimites now.

l_090__800x533_.jpgl_099__800x533_.jpg

We stopped at Passo de Valles - 2276m for lunch and had an interesting chat with a couple who saw us checking out the Dolimiti Bike marathon brochure. It is a 6 month challenge to get your map stamped at all of the Restaurants at the passes. We got ours stamped - don't expect to finish the marathon this year..

l_119__800x533_.jpg

Around every corner there is a breathtaking view (we have not seen anything like this before - as you can tell !!)

l_121__800x533_.jpg

Look closely and you can see the road where we wind further up towards the Passo d. Falzarego.

l_123__800x533_.jpg
l_125__800x533_.jpg

A stop at Falzarego Pass - and we have one more stamp on our map.

l_126__800x533_.jpgl_128__800x533_.jpgl_135__800x533_.jpg

We arrived late afternoon and found the Hotel Mirage.

RIVA del GARDA - Alpine passes 20 JUNE

Passes - glorious sunshine & snow capped Alps.

Following John Hermanns recommendations we decided to tackle some passes today.
Leaving Riva we came across the Torrente Palvio (waterfall), quite stunning and obviously a very popular road.

131__533x800_.jpg137__533x800_.jpgFBD178ED2219AC681725FE51E5522432.jpg146__533x800_.jpg156__800x533_.jpg

Stopping beside Lago L d'Idro (Lake) the reflections of the Alps on the lake were irresistable, and where some people live is just amazing, their view of the lake on a calm morning must be spectacular.

162__800x533_.jpgFBE0A8902219AC681721A9B8123C4553.jpg172__800x533_.jpg
173__800x533_.jpg175__800x533_.jpg

Our first view of the snow capped alps in the background with lush green pasture in front was staggering.

183__800x533_.jpgFBF0484F2219AC6817CE03E69593D73A.jpg198__800x533_.jpg210__800x533_.jpg

Passing through Bagolino and up the mountain towards Passo di Croce Domni (1892m) the road narrowed and became very twisty as we wound our way up and up - quite amazing to be riding this stuff !!!

216__800x533_.jpgFBFE11D92219AC6817822AB50EAB2380.jpgFC03D3962219AC6817322E1FFF0A88AE.jpg230__800x533_.jpgFC0B36A12219AC68179E0BBE35C941FA.jpg246__533x800_.jpg

We arrived at Passo d Vivione (1828m) just in time for lunch which the local was hoping to share with me.

248__800x533_.jpg251__800x533_.jpg254__800x533_.jpg
(did you spot Nougat - having a lovely time out today ?)

255__800x533_.jpg256__800x533_.jpg

When faced with a sign like this you know its going to be fantastic riding.

257__800x533_.jpg
(my guess is Toranti means torturous corners !!!)

259__800x533_.jpgFC2A2DB92219AC6817A7320646F2C5D5.jpgFC305A742219AC6817AE28190B84A871.jpgFC3521A02219AC681739D82A8F8DCC66.jpgFC381E742219AC68175A425AE4E84058.jpg266__800x533_.jpg

And home to Riva we went very satisfied with our day.

LAKE GARDA - South to North 19 JUNE

The Italian Alps.

Our last evening in Garda (Sth) was delightful. Meeting up with Lin & Prue we enjoyed swimming, coffee and cocktails before dinner.

Our swimming spot was very popular.

FB3CA51C2219AC68177C7AF848698DF6.jpgFB3FBD1C2219AC6817D118B5464CB7A5.jpg

Dinner with sunset over Lake Garda was spectacular.

FB4224B42219AC6817CD3D3F08D5FA5A.jpgFB44B0292219AC681793108DE3F205BF.jpg024__533x800_.jpg

Wednesday morning we rode out of Garda past Mount Maggiore, stopping at the trenches of Monte Baldo - war time Border Zone, there is still evidence of the trenches.

FB49B6A92219AC6817AB6CCCBD8BEE6D.jpg
FB4D58FD2219AC68177F687E46333D86.jpgFB4FFA992219AC6817F4A39B0460C614.jpgFB53E14F2219AC6817AEE82A6FF51D6B.jpgFB5637872219AC68177F7DC25C67CD25.jpgFB59E75B2219AC6817E5ED11B46AEC93.jpg

We arrived at the spectacular Bocca Navene, the view was amazing, and as John Hermann states in his book, the view across Lago di Garda to the alps can take some time to absorb, unfortunately a bit hazy due to heat and smog, but still spectacular.

FB5C65622219AC6817FB4EF3E820D579.jpgFB6035C62219AC68171FCC8B89B31FC1.jpgFB66F7602219AC6817B083EFDF25E9F0.jpgFB6B62332219AC68170FB5E18A26F081.jpg

Moving on towards Riva del Garda (Nth) the road narrowed and almost disappeared.
FB6EAE962219AC6817994F73819BB870.jpgFB7350B12219AC681735731672127DBB.jpg

Riva del Garda is at the top end of Lake Garda in the Italian Alps, very popular for wind surfing - for obvious reasons, very windy on the lake.
Beautiful place to stay, another sunset over Garda and that was it for the day.
